Worm Castings

What are Worm Castings?

To be honest, Worm Poop

But really, Worm Castings are an odorless, highly effective, all-natural compost. They are filled with organic matter, nutrients, and microbes.

Why Worm Castings?

The practical argument: the minerals, nutrients, and microbes in worm castings make it the best amendment for your soil. The nutrients and minerals revitalize tired plants, you know what tired plants look like, by giving the plants the nutrients they need to build strong roots, foliage, and flowers. The microbes and organic matter do even more heavy lifting. Good microbes coat the roots and protect them from disease and bad bacteria that can cause root rot. The organic matter helps balance the soil and give it better water absorption, making your plants more drought resistant. The real kicker is how all the parts work together: Worm Castings reinstate the nitrogen cycle by feeding soil microbes so they can regenerate the natural form of nitrogen for your plants.

The chemical argument: Worm castings allow your soil to regenerate nutrients. This is the same process that happens in nature and those plants are usually doing pretty well. This way of building up your soils fertility poses no health risks to you, children nearby, or pets nearby. This is a stark contrast to the risks of using chemical fertilizer which is harmful to humans when it is chemically processed, used, and for weeks after application. While chemical fertilizer can cause harm directly to humans who contact it, it also causes problems downstream- literally. Most of it washes into the water ways where it causes our rivers to overgrow and harm their natural functions. This overflow damages the water systems all the way down to golf of mexico where the chemical fertilizer has created a thick mat of algae that has created a dead-zone at the mouth of the Mississippi. Worm castings are a practical alternative to chemical fertilizer which harms people and the environment in so many ways all while healing and building your soil.

The waste reduction argument: The planet Earth is limited. We can’t make trash forever. Since 60% of trash is compostable I thought it would be good place to start. Everything we feed our worms is past its’ intended use and its now a waste product or a byproduct. Most of what we feed our worms is food waste form the Goshen community. In fact, when you buy Worm Castings from Post-Waste Worm Farm for every 1 lb you buy, 1.25 lbs of organic waste is diverted from the landfill where it would otherwise rot and turn into greenhouse gasses. This worm farm and the worm poop that goes forth from it are a homegrown solution to immediate, local, global, and approaching problems.
